IN&OUT | KETER
One of the largest and most challenging projects I've done. The project main idea was to produce a sofa in one piece, without any kind of assembly. In plastic terminology it calls "Mono-Block". The challenge was to design sofa that will look good and meet all requirements of mass production mono-block items - light weight, stack ability and good value for money.
"Good design does not necessarily mean expensive"
I know I could get a high quality design through accurate shapes and smooth structure. The R&D process took almost two years. The main work was seeking after the right ergonomic sitting position and conformability.
Only after feeling and testing the first 3D model, I was able to make the decision regarding the design details. The first thing I knew is that I do not want the whole sofa to be shaped in rattan texture. It was important to me that the contact area of the sofa and the user body will be smooth and pleasant, and in terms of design I did not want to make the sofa feels "heavy", so I had to seek after the best proportions between the texture (rattan) and the smooth clean surface.
The conceptual design was creating a nice and quiet embracing feeling to the user. Through the flowing curves of the arm set into the sitting area, the sofa invites the user to sit down and feel cozy. This project contained a tight work with the engineers since this kind of items means extremely huge molds and special injection machines as well.
